Why thank you XD

And... is it just me, or is he even better-and younger-looking this season?  Maybe its the haircut?

Yep.  Shorter hair...better clothes.

Tim Roth is a great actor- but I know I'm going against the norm here by saying that he can at times be condescending, rude and arrogant to other people.

The role he plays in the show is that of a "human lie detector" but the more I watch the show, I come to accept it as a complete drama and not much truth behind his character. The way he acts sometimes (within the show) to clients and others is offensive. Truthfully, if Cal Lightman existed in real life and had the same type of job, no one would hire him.

But thats not to say that he isn't a good actor, which he is. Loved him in Reservoir Dogs and he's developing the character in the way he sees fit.

Have you ever seen the movie "Rob Roy"? Tim Roth plays a horrible man named Archibald Cunningham. I saw the movie back in 1995 and was so horrified by the scene where he raped this poor woman that I loathed him (the character, I didn't really even know Tim Roth) for more than a decade!! Then, when I watched the first episode of Lie to me, my husband pointed out that it was the same guy from the movie. It's just proof to me what a fantastic actor he is. He sells violence with the multiple personality lady , he sells gentleness with his daughter, he sells disappointment with what he's able to see all around him all of the time. I love watching him. How do you think they approach a scene like the one in season 2 episode 1 where he has to attack the multiple personality lady in order to bring out the protective personality? I mean, there has to be some trauma involved on both sides. Or maybe I'm just too sensitive? What do you think?

He handled that scene so amazingly...  You just don't see acting like that on a regular basis on mainstream television these days.

There are actually people like Cal in real life. He studies emotions. In order to detect lies he has to know what triggers certain emotions and that the fuse is slightly different in different people. However, he can read them, he can see  how they respond to different things and thus guage what might be needed to trigger the response he is looking for. He can also present the appearance of those emotions to other people, even if he is not initially feeling it himself, such as the attack on the girl with DID.

You often see him in the first series echoing people's positions (I am thinking of the child who kept his friends backpack in the kidnapping episode) as well as their emotional state, how often does he say "I understand how you feel" (Gillian also does this)? This is to get people to relax and open up around him, people will volunteer more information using this technique. He also uses agression to trigger certain responses, to get people defensive and likely to give up the truth (again used in many episodes, including Moral Waiver and Blinded). He manipulates and coerces people into doing what he needs them to do to reveal the truth. He uses his body and other people's perception of him to excellent effect. It is far more evident when he is being antagonistic than when he is being nice, but the latter is there also.

How people percieve him is the control he has in each of these situations and a control everyone has but that few people realise.
